Background to the Creative Industries Working Group

It is anticipated that many aspects of the production, distribution and consumption models in the TV, film, music, advertising and digital creative industries are likely to be radically disrupted by the high-bandwidth, low-latency characteristics promised by 5G technologies. In addition - as with previous generations of connectivity – the digital content industries will be a key driver of mass consumer take-up of these new technologies. The UK5G Creative Industries Working Group will focus on developing the potential economic and social opportunities afforded by 5G in the UK. This sector is amongst the most demanding requiring huge network capacity. 5G could unlock the potential of these industries by offering high bandwidth low latency streaming of audio-visual and graphic content.

It will seek to understand how the next generation of innovative digital technologies ensures that the UK retains its status at the global forefront of creative content.

As well as working closely with industry partners across the sector, this Working Group will provide policy recommendations into the DCMS 5G Programme.

This represents an exciting opportunity for a small number of experienced individuals to join the Working Group to contribute to a significant national initiative which could have lasting positive economic impact across the UK.

We are looking for a mix of members from both media & games organisations and also from telecoms businesses.

Required personal capabilities/responsibilities might also include:

• Relevant understanding of media production/distribution at a national/global scale
• Senior R&D responsibility in a media/games organisation
• Expertise in 5G technologies and its application to media/games
• Links to local, relevant research bases

The call for applications is currently open and will close on 30th June. We will inform successful applicants by mid-July.
