Earlier this month 5G Realised gathered a panel of industry experts to comment on advanced communications, namely: Why Do We Need 5G? What Can’t 4G or WiFi Deliver? What is the Role of IoT?
It was nothing but high praise for 5G progress in the UK from Tony Sceales Head of Programme Development - 5G Testbeds and Trials (5GTT) Programme at DCMS:
The UK has got one of the most thriving trial environments worldwide in 5G technologies. The UKs MNOs have also been working at great pace with 5G. When the 5GTT Programme started out in 2017 there were a lot of sceptics, but as of the end of 2019, all 4 MNOs have live 5G networks in the UK. It’s a massive shift for the country with significant collaborative investment from both public and private sectors.
Tony mentioned the National Productivity Investment fund, going on to say "the government's view is that productivity will be materially changed with the help of 5G. Not 5G alone of course, we need IoT/AI/Robotics along with other technologies to make the use cases work - so the next challenge is how do we link everything up to deliver on the potential value to UK plc?"
