Historic investment, future potential and lessons for companies, investors and UK Government

Where are the global investment hotspots?

Overall disclosed investment in mobility sectors has increased dramatically over the past 10 years. We estimate that at least $450bn has been invested into 4 segments – Electric vehicles, connected and autonomous Vehicles, shared mobility services, and related industries - over the last five years alone. Investment in 2019 ($93bn), while below the 2018 peak of $134bn, is comparable to the entirety of recorded investment between 2010 and 2013.

The largest area of investment to date has been in shared mobility, which includes well- publicised investments and IPOs in the areas of ride-hailing and last-mile logistics. However, we believe we are seeing three waves of investment: Firstly, in shared mobility, secondly, electric vehicles (EV) and connected cars, and thirdly, autonomous vehicles (AV), corresponding to the relative maturity
of each industry.
