Welcome to the UK5G newsletter, your fortnightly update on events and news from the UK's 5G testbeds and trials.

From the 5G RuralFirst team...

Today at 5G RuralFirst we’re delighted to announce the launch of ‘Tapestry – Sounds of a 5G Orkney’ - a celebration of the use cases and trials we have been conducting in the Orkney Islands.

As part of our mission to prove the potential of rural 5G, we teamed up with Orcadian Composer, Erland Cooper to create a musical track inspired by sounds from across a 5G connected Orkney, one of the UK’s most remote places.

We wanted to create a piece of music that truly celebrates life and industry on the island and showcases the power and potential 5G can bring rural areas.

Firstly, we invited Orcadian citizens to share the sounds that incapsulate Orkney for them – we had everything from buzzing bees to bonnie bagpipes submitted!

We also collected sounds from across our test site locations: Scottish Sea Farms, the pre-historic village of Skara Brae and Hammars Hill wind farm. These sounds showcase the different uses of 5G in rural areas, from industrial IoT at the salmon farms to sustainable tourism at Skara Brae.

Finally,  we set up 5G enabled remote mics, temporarily planted throughout the islands to stream the sounds of Orkney, in real time, straight to Erland’s studio in London.

These sounds, along with the sounds collected at our use case sites and sent in by the residents helped inspire and create the music track.

The result? A beautiful eleven-and-a-half-minute sonic portrait of what it is to live and work in Orkney.

This is Tapestry – the sound of a 5G Orkney.
