The 15th October SME/LEP WG Workshop, hosted by West Midlands 5G, proved to be very useful and stimulating session with 28 participants present plus one dial-in. Following the morning’s excellent case study presentations, attendees split into three sperate groups to focus on what actions were needed over the next 12 months.
A summary: LEPs & SMEs WG will work on the following priorities...
- Create a campaign arc for communication and look for quick wins in better linkages between specific parts of UK5G site with other attendees involved in the workshop. Also to consider bitesize, tailored newsletter format with input from attendees to create more direct relevance with other regional programmes. Communication to distinguish between start-ups, missing middle and established SMEs and also tailoring to localities.
- Produce a roadmap illustrating “technical readiness” of 4G/5G to support commercial application and inform wider communication campaign. Also look at combining/aligning/creating other maps with partners so that SMEs can quickly see what is happening close to their locality
- Work with Connected Places Catapult and UK5G Connected Places WG to plan and deliver a small number of “5G train the trainers” events to disseminate deeper expertise on Manufacturing 5G/I4.0, Health and Rural. Priority regions will be the LEPs involved with WM5G, Wales and Northern Ireland and around Media City as these represent the closest contacts within the WG and therefore the best opportunity for early wins. These will take place over the next 12 months. Anticipate 4- 5 events over 12 months. Will establish a tentative schedule with the aim of having the first (Manufacturing) event early in the new year.
- Establish monthly series of short, half hour conference calls for WG and plan ahead for further face to face meeting as WG feels useful.
