Monthly report following the inaugural Testbed & Trials Review Working Group

Monthly Report – September 2019

Written by Paul Beastall – WG Co-chair

We recently held the first meeting of the UK5G Testbed and Trials Working Group. The group is co-chaired by Mansoor Hanif of Ofcom and Paul Beastall of Cambridge Consultants. We had many high calibre candidates apply to the working group and were delighted to be joined by members from organisations such as Qinetic, Arup, Network Rail and Millbrook, as well as DCMS.

One of the key areas of discussion was around how we can learn from the initial trials and testbeds, to ensure that the insights generated can be shared with later trials. We also consider how we can help share best practice between trials, helping to make them more sustainable beyond the trial period.

We focused on a number of key topics:

  • Security: We will form a separate security sub-working group to advise testbeds and trials
  • Spectrum: Ofcom and UK5G will work to raise awareness of sustainable spectrum options
  • Best practice: Sharing and capturing key learning from government backed and influenced trials, including and beyond the DCMS activities
  • Standardisation: Capture key inputs from trials that can be used to shape UK contributions to international standards bodies

It was agreed that we would meet monthly, either in London or sometimes by visiting some of the trial locations.
