DCMS briefing event for an Academic Research Project

In 2020 DCMS set out their ambitions around supply chain diversification in the 5G Supply Chain Diversification Strategy. The strong relationship between government, industry and academia is key to delivering this strategy.

Within industry there is a recognition of the importance and value of interoperability. This has led to a range of initiatives and the development of technical applications of interoperability, such as Open RAN. The government is committed to supporting these and other emerging deployment methods, where they align with our aim to open up the market to increased competition, innovation and diversity.  We also recognise the urgent need to build stronger relationships between the major vendors and the R&D ecosystem in the UK to ensure diversity in the supply chain. In light of the above, we are now developing the scope for potential collaborative projects between academia and large RAN vendors using Open RAN, which we believe may be of interest to you.

The Event:

This is open to organisations and businesses who may be interested in taking part in this collaboration project, including:

  • UK Universities
  • Large RAN vendors
  • Mobile Network Operators (MNOs)
  • Small and medium sized telecoms equipment and software vendors
  • Systems Integrators
  • Catapults
  • Other relevant organisations

Please note that if you are looking for potential collaborators there will be an opportunity for delegates to deliver a three-minute pitch to the room with a max of three slides for each pitch. If you would like to pitch during the briefing event, please select the option when you register for the event.

More detailed information about this new collaborative initiative can be found on the Future Open Networks Research Challenge competition page. This briefing event is a chance to raise any queries that you may have at this stage. For information, enquiries, and questions about this competition please contact ONP.enquiries@dcms.gov.uk: stating clearly in the subject header 'Academic Research project'. DCMS will issue formal answers to clarification questions, which can be viewed by all interested parties, as the collaboration project progresses.
