What 5G trials are currently live in the UK?

I’ve seen many 5G trial announcements. But what exactly are they trialling? What is going on in the UK right now?

  • Trials help industry understand the challenges of deploying new technologies according to emerging international standards. Testing 5G applications will help prove different applications (use cases), bringing ideas closer to commercial viability for future markets. Funding from Government is often available to help de-risk investment in emerging technologies and accelerate its ultimate roll-out.

There are a number of trials currently underway in the UK at the moment - this list is not exhaustive! I'd encourage anyone running a project related to 5G to drop the team a line and see what they can do to help.

    • 5G Rural Integrated Testbed - exploring agriculture and consumer broadband in Cumbria, Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Inverness-shire, Perthshire and Monmouthshire
    • 5G RuralFirst - considering the business cases that might make rural connectivity viable, based primarily on the Orkney Islands, and in the farmlands of Shropshire and Somerset
    • AutoAir - looking at connecting autonomous vehicles with 5G at Millbrook Proving Ground
    • Worcestershire 5G Consortium - working with the West Midlands' fantastic manufacturing industry to see if 5G can offer productivity improvements in factory settings.
    • 5G Smart Tourism - providing advanced services - including augmented reality guides - in major attractions in Bath and Bristol, including the Roman Baths and Millennium Square
    • Liverpool 5G testbed - exploring improvements that 5G can make in health and social care in a Liverpool district
    • 5G Brighton
    • Trans Pennine Connectivity 5G trial - Trans Pennine Railway line between Leeds and Manchester
    • Open Compute Project - telco project
