The European Friends of 3GPP hosted the RAN, CT and SA meetings in sunny Sorrento. The 3GPP support team gave a great summary of the last 20 years.

“In the intervening years, we have moved from 2G to 3G to 4G to 5G (where next?), countless thousands of 3GPP delegates have attended nearly 3700 meetings, clocking up more than 2500 delegate-years of attendance, and have produced over one million TDocs and over 54,000 versions of TSs and TRs.” (John Meredith 3GPP MCC).

SA had an interesting debate on the timescales for Rel-17. For those who are not 3GPP savvy, Rel-15 was the first 5G release (with an early drop, normal drop and late drop) which almost completed (RAN pushed late release out to June 2019). Questions are being raised about the compatibility of the many changes that will come along – here is the 3GPP response. Rel-16 will add new features and is due to be done by Dec 2019. Work is now starting on the requirements for Rel-17, so if you want your vertical, or feature supported get along to the SA1 meetings. We finally agreed that we could not agree on the Rel-17 completion date, probably until mid 2021.
