Trials will start between October and December this year and form part of Vodafone's mission to connect the UK with ultra-fast connection speeds of one gigabit per second on the move, at home or at work.

The cities include:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Glasgow
  • Liverpool
  • London
  • Manchester

Vodafone engineers are already installing the required infrastructure in 40 sites across these locations and teams are seeking enterprise partners to test 5G's potential for enabling new applications in hospitals, factories or schools.

This move comes after Vodafone bought the largest block of 5G spectrum in Spring's auction and successfully completed their trial a week later. They will use learnings gathered from these seven cities over the course of the next two years to prepare for full scale commercial launch of 5G across the UK in 2020.

We want to make 5G and new fibre broadband services available to consumers and business throughout the UK, delivering a Gigabit society for all. We will also be bringing ultra-fast 4G to several hundred sites in hard to reach rural areas this year, building on our position as the network that offers the best voice coverage in the UK.
