5G Rural First - project spotlight
5G RuralFirst is a co-innovation project, part-funded by the UK Government, led by Cisco and involving a consortium of partners that includes principal partner, the University of Strathclyde, as well as the BBC, the Agri-EPI Centre, Orkney Islands Council and Scottish Futures Trust. The goal of the project is to build a testbed for rural 5G trials and projects that will explore and identify new business models and use cases for connectivity deployment in rural areas, and showcase the potential of 5G in rural environments.
5G RuralFirst will create three testbeds in the Orkney Islands, Somerset, and Shropshire. The testbeds will play an important role in trialling core 5G infrastructure and technology by tapping into the capabilities and expertise of the leading technology, broadcasting, agricultural, academic, and public sector organisations that make up the consortium.
Through these trials, 5G RuralFirst aims to demonstrate the game-changing potential of 5G technologies to governments, policymakers, regulators and mobile network operators. It seeks to showcase the partnership potential of 5G in rural areas and help share the new market, technology and application opportunities. 5G RuralFirst will encourage longer-term investment, as well as engage rural communities in how 5G could benefit them, personally and professionally.
