Your fortnightly UK5G update
Welcome to the UK5G newsletter, your fortnightly update on 5G events, news and testbeds and trials.
The UK5G Advisory Board met on 16th October in London in what was a positive and productive meeting working with the DCMS to accelerate the 5G roll-out within the UK (see photo below). Steady progress has been made by the three working groups covering the subject areas in 5G testbed and trials, international engagement and UK5G proposition & promotion.
No doubt you will have also seen in the news that the European Commission hosted a 3GPP Workshop on 5G about 2 weeks ago. It was a comprehensive briefing from key experts in 3GPP informing ITU sanctioned evaluation groups, policy makers and industrial experts on the progress of the 3GPP work on 5G technologies, and whether it has met and exceeded the IMT-2020 requirements.
In a recent CWJ article, I shared my views on what’s new for the Internet of Things in the 5G era from 3GPP Release 15. In particular, how the manufacturing industry could leverage NR wireless connectivity to provide the degree of flexibility, mobility, versatility and ergonomics that is required for the Factory of Future through, for example, NR Industrial IoT (NR-IIoT). I also touch on what’s in store for the connected, autonomous vehicles and low power devices. Hope you enjoy reading it!
