As the UK’s 5G Testbeds & Trials programme draws to a close, the UK5G consortium concluded on 30th September and a new innovation network for the whole telecoms sector officially begins.

We would like to thank all our members, the UK5G Advisory Board and Working Group members for their fantastic support and contributions over the past five years.

A New Innovation Network

While looking to build on the success and learnings of UK5G, the UK Telecoms Innovation Network, or UKTIN, has a different – and broader - focus, designed to act as an information and ideas hub for industry and academics looking to collaborate on developing new mobile and broadband technology. It will provide a single point of coordination across the UK telecoms ecosystem, ensuring knowledge is effectively and efficiently shared across the telecoms industry.   Significantly it extends far beyond 5G to include all wireless infrastructure (chip to RAN) as well as satellite, system integration, fibre, network security, network management (eg OSS/BSS), AI, and data cloud infrastructure.

It will also be delivered by a new consortium: Digital Catapult, CW (Cambridge Wireless), University of Bristol and WM5G.

While a new web portal is being developed, UK5G.org will operate as the temporary home for UKTIN.  In the meantime the content on uk5g.org will continue to be available, and visitors to this site from 3rd October onwards can expect to see content reflecting the new remit, with a broadened focus that encompasses the whole telecoms sector.

What Does This Mean For Me?

Membership is free of charge and as a UK5G member, you will automatically be enrolled into the new innovation network.  Assuming that you are happy to be involved, you don’t need to take any action now.  When the network formally launches in 2023, you may be asked to provide further details about yourself so the network can effectively meet your needs, but we’ll keep you updated as plans progress.

If however you do not want to be automatically enrolled, then we’ll be letting you know how you can opt out soon.  By opting out, your data will be removed from the UK5G database with immediate effect and will not be transferred over.

The UK5G Twitter and LinkedIn accounts will transition to the new network.

If you are signed up to receive UK5G newsletters, these will now transition to UKTIN newsletters.  If you no longer wish to receive these, you can unsubscribe by clicking the link at the bottom of the newsletter at any time.

If you have any questions, get in touch at enquiries@uktin.net.
